We are thrilled to announce that librarian film participant, Marie Masferrer, is joining our @sidewalkfilm Festival screening THIS SATURDAY at 10am in Birmingham, Alabama.

With Alabama facing some of the toughest censorship issues for libraries, it is an honor to have #FReadomFighter and Florida media specialist Marie join us to discuss her experiences with book banning in her home state (and what you can do about it). Get tickets now!

Escambia County is no stranger to the unprecedented wave of book banning courageous librarians and community members have been fighting back, demanding First Amendment Rights for all students with @penamerica @penguinrandomhouse and authors including @iamgmjohnson and @amandascgorman at their side.

Librarian film participant Michelle White will be there for a special Q&A after the screening and “The Stamped Stacks” is making its return. This collection of donated books on the queer experience, by queer authors, or currently banned in local school districts will be free for audience members. 💪📚💜

Australian Premiere 💪📚 🐨 on the horizon! Melbourne International Film Festival (@melbfilmfest) will be screening THE LIBRARIANS on 18th and 24th of August.

As book challenges and bans continue to spread at an unprecedented rate — we see an international ripple effect. Beloved Australian children’s book author Mem Fox’s 1988 book GUESS WHAT? about an old woman, with various witchlike qualities was banned in some Florida school districts for so-called pornographic content. The illustration flagged depicted the woman wearing a snorkeling mask while bathing in a sink that is comically small for her.

We are thrilled to have received an Honorable Mention for Outstanding Documentary Feature at the 2025 @framelinefest for the film’s “impactful portrayal of the real-life heroes defending our right to knowledge and visibility.”

This honor is particularly special as Frameline Film Festival is the longest running and largest queer film festival in the world and according to @penamerica, LGBTIA+ authors and stories centering queer experiences accounted for 25% of the books banned in the 2023-24 school year. Books and films provide an outlet for queer youth and allies to see themselves represented and it is essential to their livelihood that these stories are available. Thank you to Frameline for continuing to uplift those voices, and thank you to all our librarians who continue fighting to preserve our right to read and to keep ALL their students safe.
